About
The Wall of Debt
The Wall of Debt is a powerful, visual representation of the immense financial burden weighing on Ontario students. We're an organizing to oppose the recent harmful OSAP changes and the ongoing rise in tuition fees. Every "brick" you see here tells a individual student's story: their specific debt, the institution they attend, and the very real impact these policies have on their lives.
By adding your brick, you help us build a clearer, undeniable picture of this escalating crisis and amplify student voices to the provincial government, institutions, and the public.
What are the changes?
- End of Tuition Freeze & Annual Increases The provincial government has announced an end to the domestic tuition freeze, with a projected 2% annual tuition hike for the next three years, and future increases indexed to inflation.
- OSAP Shift to Loans: A fundamental reversal of student aid, OSAP's grant-to-loan ratio has shifted from previously offering up to 85% grants and 15% loans, to now a maximum of 25% grants and a mandated minimum of 75% loans.
What this means for students
This dramatic shift directly translates to higher upfront costs and heavier repayment burdens for decades to come. The drastic reduction in non-repayable grants means more debt accruing interest, while the tuition increases further inflate the cost of every year of study. This combination creates an increasingly challenging and often impossible financial landscape for students trying to access and complete their education.
